With the increasing maturity of the fundamental research technology of fiberglass and the continuous introduction of advanced foreign equipment and technology, the domestic fiberglass industry has developed rapidly in recent years, with a continuous expansion of the varieties of gel coat resins. The continuous improvement in the variety and performance of gel coat resins has led to an expansion of their application fields. Currently, gel coat resins are used in many areas such as sanitary ware like shower trays, bathtubs, and countertops; the shipbuilding industry including yachts, lifeboats, and patrol boats; as well as in transportation, construction, entertainment, medical instrument casings, billboards, telephone booths, and security booths. Gel coat resins are divided into clear gel coats and colored gel coats. In the production process of these products, the vast majority of...
With the increasing maturity of the basic research technology of fiberglass and the continuous introduction of advanced foreign equipment and technology, the domestic fiberglass industry has developed rapidly in recent years, and the variety of gel coat resins has been continuously expanded. The continuous improvement in the variety and performance of gel coat resins has led to an expansion of their application fields. Currently, gel coat resins are used in sanitary ware such as shower trays, bathtubs, and countertops, in the shipbuilding industry such as yachts, lifeboats, and patrol boats, as well as in transportation, construction, entertainment, medical instrument casings, billboards, telephone booths, and security booths, among many other fields. Gel coat resins are divided into clear gel coats and colored gel coats. In the production process of products, colored gel coats are required in most cases. In the past, colored gel coats were made by adding an appropriate amount of color paste (also known as pigment paste) to clear gel coats, mixed manually to create color. However, this method often leads to color differences in the production of large assembled products, such as cooling towers or mass-produced items like seats in sports venues, severely affecting the aesthetics of the products. To overcome this drawback and improve the appearance quality of products, it is necessary to produce color gel coats for customers that have no color difference. The development of low-styrene volatile gel coat resins is very necessary and has significant practical significance. Many new types of gel coat resins have been developed abroad.
Currently, there are not many companies in China that can produce colored gel coats. Ashland Polyester (Kunshan) Co., Ltd. is the largest supplier of colored gel coats in China. To provide faster and more timely service to gel coat customers, Ashland has launched the INSTANT rapid gel coat automatic production system worldwide (including Ashland Polyester (Kunshan) Co., Ltd.), which can produce the required color gel coats for customers in just a few minutes. Jinling DSM Company has introduced the world's most advanced fully computerized color matching and mixing colored gel coat automatic production line, Eurotinter, with an annual production capacity of 1000 tons from the DSM headquarters (which has the largest gel coat factory in the world). This is the fifth colored gel coat production line of this equipment in the world. Jiangsu Fuling Chemical Co., Ltd. (formerly Jiangsu Fuli Chemical) has also introduced an advanced fully computerized color matching and mixing colored gel coat production line from the Netherlands. The color matching systems for colored gel coats produced by the state-owned large enterprise Tianma Group (which has a significant influence in the domestic fiberglass industry) and Yida Chemical (the largest gel coat manufacturer in Taiwan and one of the main gel coat suppliers in Southeast Asia and Asia, a wholly-owned Taiwanese enterprise) use the world's most advanced computer color matching, and then personnel adjust the colors to minimize color differences caused by different batches of color paste.
The matrix of gel coat resin is unsaturated polyester resin (UP), so most companies producing UP also produce gel coat resins. According to incomplete statistics, the annual sales volume of gel coats in China was around 20,000 tons in 2001, of which colored gel coats accounted for more than 3,000 tons. In recent years, the annual sales volume of gel coats from various companies has mostly increased by 10% to 30%, and the growth trend remains strong, indicating that the gel coat market has great potential. Although the market prospects are good, competition is still very fierce. To establish a foothold in the industry, it is necessary to have sufficient economic strength to occupy the market with high quality and low prices, or to have unique products. Although the annual sales volume of gel coats from Beianhe Fiberglass Factory is not very large, its unique gel coats such as air-dry gel coats, radiation-cured gel coats, and shatterproof mold gel coats are in a leading position in the industry, and the profits are still considerable. Yida Chemical has developed a type of SMC color paste that can withstand high temperatures of 180°C and has a surface without patterns, successfully applied in Yuan Da central air conditioning. Gel coat resin is a special resin for making the gel coat layer of fiberglass products. Styrene is still the most suitable monomer for UP resin. However, styrene has a high vapor pressure at room temperature and is prone to volatilization, especially in fiberglass products made using hand lay-up or spray molding processes, where it is more likely to volatilize during the gel coat layer and backing reinforcement layer processes.
